The Fred Train: It’s Coming

The big news this morning are “the sources” saying that Fred Thompson has started making fundraising phone calls, will start an exploratory committee shortly and make an announcement on July 4th. The message is clear. Fred will run for President.

For those who peruse the Tennessee Blogosphere, this is not really big news. Adam Groves had this one week and one day ago. The Day of the Fred is not quite at hand but talk about Fred’s commitment to the race cannot be questioned now.

Despite my initial skepticism, this is a train that will not be derailed. Fred Thompson has answered the call of the conservatives and come to fill the void. The only question now is will he live up to the expectations that conservatives, and most especially Tennessee conservatives, have built up for him.

The political honeymoon is coming to an end. Fred Thompson has now one more month in the sun. After that he just another candidate shuckin’ and jive-in’ votes. For all the speculation about how good a candidate he will be, the true test will begin July 5th — when he is one. Only then, as we observe Fred Thompson as an announced candidate, will we be able to discern how good (or bad) a candidate for President he is.

   Now we need Al Gore to step up and we can have a Presidential race that will engage this country.
