I ‘ve been advised that I left out Gail Kerr which would have had the added benefit of adding a bit of gender balance to the festivities. Feel free to vote “Other” for Kerr and let us know in the comments that you did.

I picked other. And by other, I meant AC Kleinheider prior to June 28, 2007.

I second the above write-in. You top all those cats put together.

P.S. There are too few women on that list, and not because you overlooked anyone.

Can we define ‘writer’? Does that mean observer reporting fully and accurately or commentator who provides the most accurate background and assessment of the overall topic?

The omission of Rick Locker, Tom Humphrey, Andy Sher and Ed Cromer is inexplicable. Any one of these four have more institutional knowledge and talent than all of the others you mentioned combined, save Larry Daughtrey.

  13. Kleinheider said,

    on August 23rd, 2007 at 2:01 pm

The omission of Rick Locker, Tom Humphrey, Andy Sher and Ed Cromer is inexplicable.

Inexplicable is a bit harsh, I think. The explanation for the first three is that they do not write for the Nashville media market. Now, in the age of the internet, almost anyone politically savvy reads these men on a regular basis so you do have a point and it is well taken.

As for Cromer, he writes for a publication that is subscription only. I don’t have a subscription so I forgot about him. If someone would like to sign me up free of charge that would be cool, BTW.

He should be on the list though. You’re right.

  14. Kay Brooks said,

    on August 23rd, 2007 at 2:05 pm

But isn’t Whitehouse’s stuff also mostly behind a subscriber fee?

  15. Bill Hobbs said,

    on August 23rd, 2007 at 2:22 pm

Larry Daughtrey’s vaunted “institutional knowledge” some how doesn’t manage to prevent him from turning out drivel on a weekly basis.

  16. Kleinheider said,

    on August 23rd, 2007 at 2:23 pm

But isn’t Whitehouse’s stuff also mostly behind a subscriber fee?

A legitmate point but Whitehouse’s work is up for free on occasion and excerpts are often cited on the internet.

Also, the Post’s subscription readership is larger (I’m guessing) by virtue of it being more than $150 dollars cheaper a year.

From what I can tell you absolutely never see Cromer unless you pay a very exorbitant fee ($277/yr).

The fact that by virtue of WKRN’s news partnership with the Nashville Post I have a free login probably didn’t hurt either.

Again, anyone who wants to spot me a free subscription to the Tennessee Journal is more than welcome ;)

  18. Kleinheider said,

How could you not nominate Egalia (TGW), or William (NiT)? Come on!

I immediately dismissed people who don’t write under their real first and last names which took out a lot of people.

  19. Trent said,

    on August 23rd, 2007 at 4:17 pm

Hey AC… The State Library and Archives (right next to the Supreme Court on 7th) has a subscription to the Tennessee Journal and you can take a gander at copies there each week. It’s a pretty good read.

  20. Elrod said,

What happened on June 28, 2007?

  21. Roger Abramson said,

    on August 24th, 2007 at 8:00 am

Hard to argue with either Ken Whitehouse of Jeff Woods. In my book anyway.

  22. Andrea White said,

I know I’m biased, but WPLN’s Joe White, Jacqueline Fellows, and Christine Butorff (also City Paper)ought to at least be given a chance to get some votes…also AP’s Erik Schelzig and Lucas Johnson…
